The Two Faces of Fear

The Bible speaks of two kinds of fear. The first is fear of the Lord and is greatly to be desired and held in our hearts. The following verses mention this fear of the Lord

The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. 

Psalms 19:9

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

 Psalms 111:10

The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

  Proverbs 10:27

In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.

Proverbs 14:26

O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him

  Psalms 34:9

Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

   Proverbs 3:7

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.      

         

Ecclesiastes 12:13 
And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Matthew 10:28

But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

Luke 12:5

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Hebrews 10:31

    The second fear mentioned in the Bible is all other fear you encounter. This fear can be overcome with the Lord's help. These following verses tell about not letting these fears overcome you.

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

2 Timothy 1:7

    Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.

  Proverbs 3:25

  And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

Matthew 14:26

    Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

   Psalms 23:4

    The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Psalms 27:1

In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.

Psalms 56:4

Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom
Luke 12:32
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
Romans 8:15
So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
